August's Volunteer of the Month

Hui-Shan

Hui-Shan is behind many of the fun videos that have been posting recently. She's got the Ken Burns touch of authenticity, along with James Cameron's flair for special effects. She's also a regular dog walker as well. Thanks for all of your great work Hui-Shan!

What do you do when you're not at the shelter?

I am a nature lover; I love to go hiking! I also like traveling, swimming, reading and cooking.

Why did you initially decide to volunteer at BACS?

I grew up surrounded by dogs and have always loved dogs. My mom is also a dog-lover and she rescued many stray dogs, so I guess I inherited her love for dogs. I left my home country, Taiwan, for study eight years ago. Since I was busy and on the move all the time (8 cities, 4 countries), I couldn't afford to have a dog. I missed my life with dogs so badly. Finally I had time to contribute after finishing the bar exam. Therefore, while waiting for my bar exam result, I decided to volunteer at the shelter.

What are your favorite things about volunteering?

Seeing the big smile of dogs after walking them, seeing their running/dancing around in the play area.

Who are your favorite dogs, past and present?

Past: Bagel, Willie, Casper, Kauz, Brandy, Addie, Humphrey, Spud, Oreo, Lali
Present: Jeannie, Debbie, Nora, Elizabeth, Bernard, Eagle, Charlie and Moose!

Carmen goes for a walk (sorta)

Carmen is one of our most rotund shelter residents. As a senior pooch, she definitely not as excitable (understatement) as the many young shelter dogs surrounding her who are eager to work off some energy. It's also true she's probably gained a few pounds since her arrival as she's ever appreciative of the treats proffered by volunteers and she spends most of her down time sitting on her bed in the kennel which isn't a calorie-burning activity.

That said, Carmen does perk up when she realizes a volunteer has picked her to venture out on a walk. I took her out today for the first time. In addition to her "extra" weight Carmen has some hip issues so she's a bit unstable at times. It quickly became apparent that the walk would involve, well, lots of not walking. However she's game and will carefully wend her way down to the park.

Once I realized her preference for frequent breaks I was able to relax and appreciate her zen approach. What's the hurry? There's a lot to see here in this spot and lots to ponder (or not) without rushing onto something else. In the end is was an entirely appropriately-paced stroll. Thank you Carmen!

She stops to sniff.

She stands.

She poses.

She rests.

She rests a bit more.

She walks.

Trekking with Trixey

I had the pleasure of walking Trixey for the first time today. We headed over to Aquatic Park in the lovely sunshine to do some exploring it turns out. Trixey is a "sniffer" as you'll see in pictures below. She had her nose to the ground checking out the surroundings for a good part of the walk! I'm sure she gathered a lot of useful information about recent park visitors. Who needs the Internet when you've got good doggie sense (scents)?

And then finally, during a break from her serious studies I got to see Trixey's cute face!
